Organized by the Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE), in collaboration with the College of Islamic Studies (CIS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), this closed academic seminar brings together international scholars to explore the ethical dimensions of armed conflict through both contemporary interdisciplinary perspectives and the rich intellectual legacy of Islamic scholarship.
November 16–18, Education City
Over three days, the seminar engages two central thematic strands:
A. Modern Ethical Questions and Challenges
This track examines contemporary issues related to war ethics, international law, political science, humanitarian studies, and philosophy. Participants will address the evolving moral challenges surrounding military engagement, civilian protection, emerging technologies, and the foundations of justice in armed conflict.
B. Towards an Islamic Ethical Framework
This strand revisits classical Islamic scholarship—including jurisprudence, theology, and political thought—to explore enduring insights on the justification, conduct, and aftermath of war. Discussions will consider how Islamic legal-ethical principles can meaningfully inform present-day debates on legitimacy, restraint, accountability, and post-conflict reconciliation.
By engaging with key questions surrounding the legitimacy of warfare, technological advancements, the treatment of non-combatants, and post-conflict justice, the seminar aims to deepen understanding of how classical Islamic ethical frameworks can contribute to contemporary discourses on morality, justice, and responsibility during times of conflict.
