The lecture examined key notions, tensions, and possible models of the moralizing state in Muslim contexts. It explored the specific role of the state in shaping public morality, drawing on contemporary perspectives in Islamic ethics and highlighting the interactionist relationship between state and religion in the Muslim world—contrasted with the more confrontational dynamics in Western secular contexts. Case studies included Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia.
