Ramadan Webinar Series - Islamic Ethics and Pandemics

By Dr. Mu’taz Al Khatib, Assistant Professor of Methodology and Ethics, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar.

In this lecture, Dr. Al Khatib talked about ethics, values and principles to be considered when responding to a pandemic. The presentation was based on three important questions:

  • Why do we need ethics?
  • How to approach a pandemic with ethics and values?
  • And what principles should govern our actions or policies during pandemics?

Debates on the subject of ijtihad have been continuous among reformers in Egypt, Syria and Tunisia since in the end of the nineteenth century. They intensified in the second half of the twentieth century, where many writings have appeared addressing the definition, conditions, necessities and applications of Ijtihad, including the qualifications of the mujtahideen, and other issues.
