The Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE), a member of Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies (QFIS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, will be hosting a specialised seminar on Ethics and Economics this week for prominent scholars.
The seminar, which will be held at QFIS on 10 – 12 June, seeks to answer two main questions; the first related to the main objectives of financial institutions in the neo-liberal economic system, which participating scholars will critically review and evaluate. They will discuss the need for the neo-liberal economic framework to be reformed from within, or the necessity of developing an alternative system.
The second question will focus on the main objectives of ‘Islamic Finance’ in relation to the individual, society, state and global economy. In addressing this question, the scholars will provide an assessment of the Islamic finance journey so far, such as Islamic banks, the Islamic Development Bank, and Islamic Dow Jones.
They will also discuss to what extent Islamic finance has introduced an alternative paradigm, or if it functions within the boundaries of the current neo-liberal economic system.
Dr Abdul Rahman Yusri, Professor at QFIS, will moderate the seminar. Participants will include: Sheikh Dr Ali Muhyealdin Al-Quradaghi, the Secretary General of the International Union of Muslim Scholars; Dr Hatem El-Karanshawy, Dean of QFIS; Dr Abdulazeem Abozaid, Associate Professor at QFIS; Dr Philip Molyneux, Dean of the College of Business, Law, Education and Social Science at Bangor University, North Wales, UK; Dr Asad Zaman, Vice Chancellor of Institute of Development, International Islamic University Islamabad, Pakistan; Dr Mohammad Fadel, Associate Professor of Law at the University of Toronto in Canada; Dr Abdullah Aljudai, the Vice President of the European Council for Fatwa and Research; Catherine Samary, a researcher from the University of Paris-Dauphine; Kavilash Chawla, Managing Director of Nur Global Strategies and Visiting Scholar at Drake University, USA; Mr Umer Chapra, renowned thinker and researcher in Finance and Economics and Senior Research Advisor at the Islamic Research and Training Institute of the Islamic Development Bank, Jeddah; Professor Tariq Ramadan, Executive Director at CILE, and Chauki Lazhar, Deputy Director at CILE.
The participants have already submitted papers ahead of the seminar including: ‘The Higher Objectives of Islamic Finance’ by Sheikh Ali M. Al-Quradaghi, ‘Back to the Future in Banking’ by Philip Molyneux, and ‘Building Genuine Islamic Financial Institutions’ by Asad Zaman.
