Press Release

The Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE), member of Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies, holds a specialized research seminar on “Politics and Ethics” between June 8th and June 10th, 2013 at the premises of Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies.

This seminar comes among a series of specialized research seminars organized by CILE where a top notch group of scholars and experts in different disciplines participates.

Those disciplines and areas of research include: Politics, Economics, Media, Bioethics & Medicine, Arts, Environment, Food, Education, Gender Studies, Psychology, and Methodology.

By organizing such seminars CILE aims to thoroughly examine and discuss the contemporary issues and present ethical approaches through bringing scholars of text and scholars of context together.

The current seminar seeks to answer two main questions:

1) what is civil state with Islamic reference?
2) What are the ethical limits on freedom of speech?

The participation will be limited to some top-notch scholars who contributed to shaping and formulating the contemporary Islamic political thought. Those include: Dr Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, the chairman of International Union for Muslim Scholars; Dr Hasan Al Turabi, the Sudanese political leader and renowned Islamic thinker; Dr Abdelmajid Najjar; Dr Abdelhamid Abu Sulayman, the chairman of International Institute of Islamic Thought; Dr Rajaa Naji, member of Moroccan Supreme Scientific Council; Dr Ibrahim Rasool, South African Ambassador to the United States; Dr John Louis Esposito, professor of International Affairs and Islamic Studies at Georgetown University; Dr Mohammad Hashim Kamali, Founding Chairman and CEO of the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies, Malaysia.

The seminar will be moderated by Dr Mohamed El Moctar Shinqiti, Professor of History of Religions at Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies, in addition to the Executive Director of CILE Dr Tariq Ramadan and Deputy Director Dr Jasser Auda.

It is worth mentioning that CILE organized an International Conference last March on “Arts and Politics in light of Ethics” where some critical issues have been discussed. This new specialized seminar is intended to take those discussions further and build on them.
