Invitation Lecture: Ethics of Marriage in the Age of Genetics

The Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE), a member of College of Islamic Studies (CIS) in Hamad Bin Khalifa University, in collaboration with the Muslims Student Association at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q), cordially invite you to the upcoming public lecture titled:

Ethics of Marriage in the Age of Genetics

 

Given by Dr. Mohammed Ghaly, professor of Islam and Biomedical Ethics at CILE. It will take place on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at 12:15 PM, at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, Room 1202.

 

 

In this lecture, the following remarks will be discussed:

 

1.    The significance of marriage in Islam and the centrality of ethics in initiating and regulating the institution of marriage and the to-be-built family. 

2.    The challenges posed by the genetic revolution which shifted the focus from “moral character” in the prospective marriage partner to “strong and healthy genes”, and how Muslim religious scholars reacted to these challenges.

3.    Concluding remarks explaining how Muslims of today can strike balance between benefiting from the fruits of genetics and safeguarding the spirit of Sharia in regulating marriage.
