Sports Ethics

The 2022 CILE Summer Program will focus on questions pertaining to the key ethical issues related to the field of Sport Studies. This topic is not only relevant to Qatar due to the 2022 World Cup, but sport and physical activities are compulsory or strongly encouraged in most countries throughout childhood schooling. Indeed, in ancient Greek philosophy, Plato and Aristotle advocated for sport as fundamental to education. Here the idea has always been the link between the body and the mind to achieve harmony. Today, not only is a large proportion of the population engaged in some sporting activities, both amateur and professional sport have enormous spectator followings and is big business. As an academic field of study, the philosophy of sport has only been developed since the 1970s. Recent controversies in professional sport have sparked a wide-ranging interest in sports ethics. These include the use of performance enhancing drugs (the ethics of cheating); the ethics of gender segregation and sex classification questions arising from trans and intersex competitors; the distinction between “able-bodied” and “disabled” sport. There are also ethics pertaining to business and sport sponsorship; race and discrimination in sport; competition and virtue ethics; politics and culture of sport; and bioethics of sport, such as in the sex and gender issues raised. Sports are games that have defined objectives and explicit rules about the means to achieve those goals. But there are also conventions of behaviour that prompt judgements about “sportsmanship”, or players who are “good sportspersons” or “bad sportspersons”. Thus, all sports have ethical dimensions. There are issues of fairness and honour in winning and in losing. In addition to the ethical, social and economic significance of sport, there is a spiritual dimension that has not attracted much academic attention but will be addressed in this program. The CILE Summer School will canvas a number of these morally significant issues as sub-topics in the broad theme of Sports Ethics and raise suggestions for further research and analysis.

CILE & The Emerging Field of Islamic Ethics

Islamic Ethics is one of the emerging scholarly fields with promising growth potential in academic research and also with great appeal among the general public. The Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE) has been contributing to this emerging field through various ways. Besides organizing international conferences and research seminars, CILE has also contributed to the field through pioneer academic initiatives. In collaboration with the renowned publisher Brill, CILE established the Journal of Islamic Ethics and the book-series Studies in Islamic Ethics. Additionally, the first-of-its-kind M.A. program “Applied Islamic Ethics” was inaugurated this academic year (2019-2020) in the College of Islamic Studies at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, to which CILE is affiliated. The program addresses how Islam, as a world religion with a rich moral tradition, engages with and contributes to the global moral discourse. Its strong interdisciplinary character combines in-depth knowledge of both theoretical and applied ethics rooted in the Islamic moral tradition.

Summer School

This School is a continuation of CILE efforts to critically examine the ethical issues triggered by cutting-edge thinking in a range of applied fields of inquiry. As per CILE standard practice, sports ethics will be approached in this school from an interdisciplinary perspective. Thus, the scholarly field of sport will be introduced in a way accessible to the general public. Attention will also be paid to the international deliberations on sports ethics and parallel discussions and experiences in the Muslim world. Discussions throughout the program will examine relevant Islamic and non-Islamic ethical perspectives. Where possible, both speakers and students will explore how scholarly disciplines rooted in the Islamic tradition (e.g., theology, philosophy, and Islamic Law) can contribute to the discourse on sport ethics.


Like previous CILE events, where CILE partnered with reputable national and international institutions, this edition of the CILE Winter School will be organized in collaboration with the Center for the Study of Islam, Culture and Society at the University of Leuven in Belgium and the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH), an initiative of the Qatar Foundation.


In order to adequately cover the various aspects and dimensions of Sport ethics the speakers in this Summer School will come from different specializations, and have different research interests.

Participation Assignments

Accepted applicants will be provided with a list of reading assignments. Each successful applicant is expected to prepare well for the Summer School, by going through these readings in advance and engaging in interactive discussions throughout the School program.
