This panel discussion will address key questions in the contemporary study of Sufi ethics. Its focus will be on futuwwa, a heroic conception of the virtues of the “young man,” but also on conceptions of “virtue” and “virtue ethics” in major Sufi treatises and poetic works.

  • Mukhtar Ali, Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics
  • Atif Khalil, The University of Lethbridge
  • Saʿdiyya Shaikh, University of Cape Town, South Africa
