Food Security and Islamic Ethics: Human Rights, State Policies and Vulnerable Groups

The Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE) issues a call for papers for a research seminar on

Food Security and Islamic Ethics

The seminar will bring together scholars addressing the core theme of food security of vulnerable populations (including migrant populations). It will address how Islamic ethics can and does inform policies and practices to secure adequate food and nutrition for populations in the Muslim world and Muslims in non-Muslim countries. A multidisciplinary approach (historical, religious, social and political) is required. Special attention given to the Covid-19 pandemic, with recommendations for future policies and practices, is highly encouraged.

The seminar is convened by CILE’s research unit Migration Ethics and Human Rights and is inspired by a funded research project on food security and migrant workers in Qatar. It is envisaged that proceedings of the seminar will be published in an edited volume in the CILE peer-reviewed book-series Studies in Islamic Ethics, published by Brill. An edited book of papers was published from the previous seminar in December 2019, with open access: Ray Jureidini and Said Hassan (eds.) Migration and Islamic Ethics: Issues of Residence, Naturalization and Citizenship, Leiden/Boston, Brill Publications (and is currently one of the top 5 most accessed publications from their entire catalogue).

Requirements

• (a) An extended abstract (500-1000 words), describing the core research ideas, main and sub-questions, and how they will be addressed in the light of the topics listed here. Authors may wish to identify other areas within the theme that they prefer to write about, or to add different dimensions within the topics below.
• (b) A brief biography (maximum 500 words) outlining the applicant’s academic background, main research interests and key publications.
• (c) Authors whose abstracts are accepted will receive an invitation to send their full papers (between 7,000 and 9,000 words) within the deadlines specified below. It is to be noted that submissions (abstracts, bios and full papers) must be written in English.

Plan of the Peer-Reviewed Publication with Brill

After the seminar, the full proceedings will undergo a double-blind review process. The papers which are successful in this process will be published as part of a thematic issue in the peer-reviewed Journal of Islamic Ethics (JIE) or a separate edited volume in the peer-reviewed book-series Studies in Islamic Ethics, both published by Brill. Submissions should follow the Brill guidelines for authors.

CILE will offer the authors of accepted papers the following:

• Covering the costs of making the publication available via open access
• Travel and accommodation costs during the three days of the seminar (if the circumstances would permit having a face-to-face seminar)
• Simultaneous Arabic-English translation throughout the seminar

Important Dates

• 1 May, 2021: Deadline for receiving abstracts and bios. Please read the topics carefully before writing the abstract,
• 3 May, 2021: Authors whose abstracts are accepted will be notified and invited to write the full papers,
• 22 May, 2021: Deadline for receiving full draft papers,
• 23 May, 2021: Authors whose papers are accepted will be notified,
• 30-31 May, 2021: The proceedings of the seminar,
• 1 September, 2021: Deadline for submitting a revised version of the post-seminar full papers, based on the remarks raised by the Review Committee and the deliberations during the seminar.
